What Is Urticaria?
Urticaria, commonly called hives, is a skin reaction that appears suddenly as itchy, raised swellings on the skin. These patches can be red or skin-colored and may move from one area to another within a short time.
Urticaria can occur for a few days or continue for months. Although it may look concerning, most cases can be effectively controlled with proper diagnosis and treatment.
Symptoms of Urticaria
People with urticaria may experience:
- Raised, itchy welts on the skin
- Burning or stinging sensation
- Swelling that changes size or location
- Warmth or redness over the affected area
- Swelling of lips, eyelids, or face (known as angioedema)
- Flare-ups triggered by heat, stress, or pressure
These rashes usually disappear without leaving marks.
What Causes Urticaria?
Urticaria occurs when certain chemicals, mainly histamine, are released in the skin. Common triggers include:
- Certain foods or food additives
- Medications such as painkillers or antibiotics
- Infections
- Insect bites or stings
- Physical factors like heat, cold, pressure, or exercise
- Emotional stress
In many chronic cases, the exact trigger may not be easily identified.
